Uses For roflumilast Roflumilast is used to prevent the symptoms (flare-ups) of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). roflumilast is available only with your doctor's prescription. Before Using roflumilast In deciding to use a medicine, the risks of taking the medicine must be weighed against the good it will do. This is a decision you and your doctor will make. For roflumilast, the following should be considered: Allergies Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to roflumilast or any other medicines. Also tell your health care professional if you have any other types of allergies, such as to foods, dyes, preservatives, or animals. For non-prescription products, read the label or package ingredients carefully. Pediatric Appropriate studies have not been performed on the relationship of age to the effects of roflumilast in the pediatric population. Safety and efficacy have not been established. Geriatric Appropriate studies performed to date have not demonstrated geriatric-specific problems that would limit the usefulness of roflumilast in the elderly. Liver disease, moderate to severe Should not be used in patients with this condition. Proper Use of roflumilast Take roflumilast exactly as directed by your doctor . Precautions While Using roflumilast It is very important that your doctor check your progress at regular visits . This will allow your doctor to see if the medicine is working properly and to decide if you should continue to take it. roflumilast is used to prevent acute flare-ups of COPD. It is not used to stop a flare-up that has already started. You should use an inhaled medicine for the acute flare-ups that will work quickly to help you breathe better. If you do not have an inhaled medicine for acute COPD flare-ups, or if you have any questions about this, check with your doctor. roflumilast may cause some people to be agitated or display other abnormal behaviors, such as feeling sad or hopeless, getting upset easily, having trouble sleeping, or feeling nervous or hostile. It may also cause some people to have suicidal thoughts and tendencies or to become more depressed. If you or your caregiver notice any of these side effects, tell your doctor right away. roflumilast may cause you to lose weight. Your doctor may need to check your weight on a regular basis while you are using roflumilast. Do not take other medicines unless they have been discussed with your doctor. This includes prescription or nonprescription (over-the-counter [OTC]) medicines and herbal or vitamin supplements. roflumilast Side Effects Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects.
