Animal studies with high doses have revealed evidence of teratogenicity. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Seven cases of birth defects have been reported (23 exposed infants) in one study. The manufacturer recommends that ethionamide not be used in women who are pregnant or likely to become pregnant, unless it is considered an essential part of the regimen.
