Why not try something new along with your favorite way to get moving? Walking: Grab a human or a four-legged friend to turn it into a social activity. Or, see your city or neighborhood in a whole new way by taking a self-guided walking tour — they aren t just for tourists Gardening: Start an herb garden, vegetable patch or flower box and you ll reap multiple benefits! A labor of love that encourages you to get outside and play in the dirt, gardening provides a chance to have the satisfaction of watching your hard work turn to fruition by brightening the scenery or harvesting backyard produce. Playing: As adults, we sometimes forget that we can play too! Scheduling a “play date once a week with children, grandchildren or friends is a great way to mix up your routine and stay active. Play a game of kickball, water balloon dodge ball, tag or hide and seek. Volunteer to be a coach or play softball or soccer. Berry picking: I live in Maine, so this is one of my favorite things to do in the summer! Yard games: You can t go to a backyard BBQ, graduation party or outdoor wedding nowadays without seeing classic lawn games like Corn Hole, horse shoe toss or Kan Jam. A yard game is an awesome activity for the whole family to enjoy the beautiful summer weather while you re outdoors grilling dinner or just need to burn off some steam after a long day of work or school. Extra tip! I ve said this before, but if you work in an office, it s great to get out and go on a brisk walk. More and more research is highlighting the benefits of frequent breaks for not only your physical health, but also for your mental sanity.
